"SOLAR SECTOR BOUNDARY CROSSING: High-latitude auroras are possible on Jan. 21st when Earth crosses through a fold in the heliospheric current sheet. This is called a "solar sector boundary crossing," and NOAA forecasters estimate a 25% chance of polar geomagnetic storms when it occurs."

According to NOAA's Forecast Discussion on February 2nd, 2014, published at 00:30 UTC & 12:30 UTC, a Solar Sector Boundary Crossing occurred the morning of February 1st @ 10:00 UTC:
"Around 1/1000 UTC a Solar Sector Boundary change from Away-to-Toward occurred ['+' is away from the Sun, '-' is toward the Sun is -]. The EPAM instrument indicated a slow rise in low energy particles, signalling the approach of the anticipated CME."

24-h Solar Wind Summary (@ 12:30 UTC): "Solar wind parameters were nominal with solar wind speed increasing slightly through the period from approximately 334 km/s to 380 km/s. Total field also saw a minor increase from 2 nT to 6 nT, while the Bz component was variable between +/-6 nT. Phi angle was mostly negative (towards) with minor deviations into a positive (away) sector."

"Along the plane of the Sun's magnetic equator, the oppositely directed open field lines run parallel to each other and are separated by a thin current sheet known as the "interplanetary current sheet" or "heliospheric current sheet" (see the figure above). The current sheet is tilted (because of an offset between the Sun's rotational and magnetic axes) and warped (because of a quadrupole moment in the solar magnetic field) and thus has a wavy, "ballerina skirt"-like structure as it extends into interplanetary space (see the figure on the left).

Because the Earth is located sometimes above and sometimes below the rotating current sheet, it experiences regular, periodic changes in the polarity of the IMF. These periods of alternating positive (away from the Sun) and negative (toward the Sun) polarity are known as magnetic sectors." - Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF).

Research Paper Notes, Conclusions on Solar Sector Boundary Crossings:

"As the solar wind flows away from the Sun, the IMF is carried with it and has a spiral shape. Along the ecliptic plane, the IMF generally has 2 or 4 sectors per solar rotation (27 days) where it is pointed toward or away from the Sun. The surface separating the polarities is called the heliospheric current sheet. A sector boundary crossing occurs when the polarity of the IMF reverses. A well-defined sector boundary crossing has a uniform field direction for about 4 days before and after the crossing." - 'Effects Associated with the Sector Boundary Crossing on July 8, 1966.'

"It is concluded that Cosmic Ray density is high near the sector boundary. The decrease of neutron intensities after the boundary passage seem to be due to Forbush decreases which occur often after the boundary passages. The dominant part of cosmic ray density around the boundary correlates with solar wind velocity, irrespectively of the sense of IMF polarity change, and the increment per the change of solar wind velocity is consistent with the rate of 0.5% decrease per 100 km/s change derived by Lucci et al. (1979) and Munakata et al. (1979)." - 'IMF Sector Boundary and Cosmic Ray Intensity Variations.'

"Recent theoretical studies have shown that perturbations in the zonal equatorial electric field may be caused during conditions of enhanced geomagnetic activity by (a) a direct penetration of high latitude electric field associated with changes in the magnetospheric convection or changes in auroral or ring current systems (e.g., regs. 26-28) and (b) delayed changes in the atmospheric dynamo associated with large-scale perturbations in the thermospehric circulation owning to energy input to the high latitude thermosphere (29, 30).

The magnitude and direction of the perturbation electric field depend on a variety of conditions and the can enhance, oppose, or even reverse the normal equatorial electric field...All that can be inferred is that, on the average, westward (negative) perturbation electric fields prevail in the equatorial regions during the post-sunset period in wake of sector boundary passage owing to enhanced geomagnetic activity." - 'Response of the equatorial ionosphere to solar magnetic sector crossing.'

We can typically expect 2 to 4 Solar Sector Boundary Crossings per every 27 day Solar Rotation period. Solar Sector Boundaries are marked by a change in polarity of the Interplanetary Magnetic Field from positive (away from the Sun) and negative (towards the Sun). A list of Solar Sector Boundary crossings back from 1926 to the present exists over at Stanford's Wilcox Observatory Website.

Description from Leif Svalgaard: "The last two numbers are the number of days of each polarity on each side of the boundary, so "+,- 2014 01 10   18 9" means that there are 18 '+' days before the boundary and 9 '-' days after. This is to make it easy to do analysis, e.g. isolated SBs."

Ben (S0) recently commented about the rare, phenomenal explosion of auroras to start 2014, and especially the outburst visible at the beginning of February: "Earth's magnetic field has been slowly weakening since the 1600s, but recently has begun to rapidly decrease in strength, as much as 15%, according to NASA and the ESA. It is possible that the increased geomagnetic activity is a result of our weakening magnetic shield, and that it may continue to surprise us."

(0:01) Good evening folks, we'll start with the latest update from Stanford's Wilcox Solar Observatory.

Newest data is up: shows a pole reversal of the North Solar Field at the New Year. Indeed, the largest Earthquake we've had in two months came on January 1st: 6.6 in Vanuatu [Downgraded to a 6.5 Mag by the USGS].

(41:15) And we were talking about the Earthquake correlations at Solar Polarity and I figured we'd better start recording this because this is going to get interesting.

And quick review for those who missed the 'Evening News' last night: we were talking about how the idea of Solar Polarity being significant to Earth is virtually identical to the idea that a Coronal Hole should be significant to Earth for Earthquakes.

And that's the idea that there are permanent Coronal Holes at the North and South Pole of the Sun.

If you look at the middle portion of the ENLIL Spiral Graphics, that basically show a side-cut, you'll notice that the Equatorial Solar Wind is much calmer than what's coming out of the Polar Regions of the Sun and that's due to the permanent Coronal Holes there and we see the same thing when a Coronal Hole is trans-equatorial or near the Solar Equator as it pumps out much harder solar wind in our direction.

FOTW -- Coronal Hole Call-back: "Because the Sun is a sphere magnet, and the Earth is a sphere magnet orbiting it with a now recognized electromagnetic connection too. It's certainly not out of the realm of possibility to consider that essentially a coronal hole is like pointing an extra strong magnet out of one part of that central star at our planet for a little bit and then taking it away…

It's not hard to see how that could potentially change, even only slightly, our orbital distance, our orbital speed, our angular momentum, our tilt; it wouldn't take much to have serious implications down under our feet."

(42:22) Now, we were talking last night [January 24th, 2014 FOTW Style Evening News] about how it's very, very clear that there's this direct connection between the solar wind and us…CMEs and Earth.

And then there's the Interplanetary Magnetic Field, our Magnetic Portal, which basically acts like a copper wire directly to the Sun which is why when it gets hit with a flare we get surged at the speed of light.

But people don't consider the fact that the Sun and Earth are both sphere magnets in an Electrical System; one orbiting around the other.

And you just think about a magnet where it's got the loops coming out one pole and going in the other; expanding out. And I said last night how they can only draw so many loops on a piece of paper, when in reality there's trillions coming out of the Earth at both poles and there's trillions coming out of the Sun at both poles. And while the Earth's only extend out to the Magnetosphere, the Sun's extend from the upper corona out past Pluto; some of those are going to interact with the Polar Fields of Earth as well.

And so we have just as strong and a permanent magnetic connection or polar connection to our Star in that way, just like we have the ones we commonly think of. So that's one of the reasons why if you have listened to and understand that these Coronal Holes allow the magnetic force of the Sun to be unabated and just push out as hard as it can, or has hard as it wants to at that moment.

(44:04) Well it's constantly doing that at the poles, there are no coronal or umbral fields down there; so it's just pumping out as hard as it wants. And we know just from the principles of magnets, and knowing how far the Heliosphere balloons out, that we have a connection to our Star in that way as well.

So lets take that and go one step further...

Having laid dormant for over 400 years, Mount Sinabung began showing signs of awakening in August of 2010. After several days of rumbling, Mount Sinabung erupted on August 29th, 2010 killing two. The eruption blew ash 1.5 km (1 mile) into the atmosphere, with lava overrunning one of it’s four craters prompting the evacuation of about 30,000 residents.
Around 6,000 villagers returned to their homes on August 31st, 2010 only to flee again a week later as more eruptions occurred. The eruption on September 3rd, 2010 turned out to be much larger than the previous weeks. This particular eruption sent ash clouds 3 km (1.9 miles) high, with earthquake tremors felt as far as 25 km (15.5 miles) away.

Another eruption on September 7th, 2010 had an even larger explosion, which was heard up to 8 km (4.9 miles) away. The ash cloud mixed-in with heavy rains and produced a centimetre thick layer of “muddy ash,” which blanketed crops, homes and buildings.

Mount Sinabung went relatively quiet after the September 7th, 2010 eruption, which allowed villagers to return to their homes in Kabanjahe and Berastagi; the two cities closest to the volcano. Only minor rumbles were reported from September 2010 to September 2013.

Mt. Sinabung: Late 2013 to the Present

In the second week of September 2013, Mount Sinabung roared back to life. Around 4,000 people fled their homes, seeking temporary shelter.  Three active weeks later, officials were compelled to evacuate around 14,000 people following a major eruption that hurled an ash cloud 7 km (4.3 miles) into the atmosphere. A 5 km (3.1 mile) evacuation zone was cleared out.
At least one major ash cloud had been ejected everyday leading up to November 11th, 2013. On November 11th, Mount Sinabung experienced the first of many pyroclastic flows, which were sent speeding down it’s southeast face. These pyroclastic flows were caused by the frequent collapse of the unstable lava dome that had formed on Sinabung’s peak.

The Latest Series of Eruptions from Mount Sinabung, as of January 2014:

According to National Geographic, during the week of January 4th, 2014 through January 9th, Mount Sinabung managed to erupt more than 220 times; with over 100 eruptions occurring in one day alone. By January 16th, pyroclastic flows had traveled over 4.5 km (2.8 miles) down the mountain side.

Volcanic Ash once again smothered crops and nearby villages, forcing a permanent evacuation of the surrounding population.

The Telegraph (January 21st, 2014) - "Dramatic footage captured pyroclastic flow, a fast-moving current of hot gas and rock, glowing red and rare phenomenon like volcanic lighting as Mount Sinabung in Indonesia's North Sumatra province erupted again on Sunday.

The 8,530-foot Mount Sinabung has sporadically erupted since September. More than 26,000 villagers have been evacuated since authorities raised the alert status for the volcano to the highest level since November 2013.

Mount Sinabung is among about 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin...Read More."

NASA’s Advanced Land Imager onboard the EO-1 satellite has captured images of pyroclastic flow and Mount Sinabung's ash cloud from space on January 16th, 2014. Before and after images show the extent of the volcano’s reach, as ash clouds blanketed several farms and villages off to the Northwest.

A Natural Source of Infrasound:

LiveScience (April 13th, 2013) - "Villarrica Volcano (Chile) is also a prodigious source of infrasound," said volcanologist Jeff Johnson, at Boise State University in Idaho.

"If it was in hearing range, it would be about 160 decibels. It would blow your eardrums," he told OurAmazingPlanet.

"The infrasound is continuous. It's intense, it's spectacular, and I'm interested in understanding why a volcano produces this kind of sound," Johnson said.
Johnson and his colleagues are searching for the source of this "powerful infrasound" in order to find better ways to monitor the weather: "The researchers can extract wind speed and direction from infrasound, Johnson reported here yesterday (April 17) at the Seismological Society of America's annual meeting. Scientists can calculate that wind data by looking at the infrasound's travel speed and the local air temperature."

What is Infrasound? According to the Department of Physics & Astronomy of UW Ontario
"Infrasound is sound which extends below the range of human hearing (from 20 Hz down to 0.001 Hz), and it emanates from many natural and man made sources.

For example, some animals, such as whales, elephants and giraffes communicate using infrasound over long distances. Avalanches, volcanoes, earthquakes, ocean waves, water falls and meteors generate infrasonic waves. Some sources of man-made infrasound are nuclear and chemical explosions, engines, machinery and airplanes (Figure 1). Infrasonic waves propagate with very little attenuation and hence are capable of propagating over great distances.

The infrasound spectrum is filled with energetic sources and distinguishing between these sources is important since their identification influences the decisions regarding the response. Figure 1 (below) illustrates the many sources of infrasonic waves...Read, See More."
So, we have video of  'rare red lightning' from The Telegraph and know that when an ash cloud explodes it can travel several kilometres up into the Atmosphere,  mixing-in with heavy rains and creating an extreme weather event which decimates crops, takes it's toll on local the animal population and causes a complex clean-up situation on roads, vehicles and buildings in the affected areas.

Static Charge? 

After 20 years of dormancy Mount St. Augustine erupted in mid-January of 2006. In a pair of interviews, the first in the 2007 Smithsonian.com article, 'Volcanic Lightning: As sparks flew during the eruption of Mount St. Augustine in Alaska, scientists made some new discovers' atmospheric physicist, Ronald Thomas of New Mexico Tech, along with his colleagues and other scientists revealed why they:
"...now believe that volcanoes can produce two kinds of lightning during an eruption. The first type, which has been understood for some time, occurs in the volcano's smoke plume a few minutes after the eruption ends. In this case, highly energized hot air and gases clash with the cool atmosphere, creating the sort of "organized," branched lightning found in a thunderstorm, says Thomas.

The second kind of lightning, which the authors called 'a newly identified explosive phase,' came as a surprise, says Thomas. As magma, ash and rocks spewed from Augustine carrying great electrical charge, they created continuous, chaotic sparks near the mouth of the volcano.

'There's some mechanism in there that's making it come out charged,' says Thomas, who hopes the new observations will lead to a better understanding of both kinds of volcanic lightning."

National Geographic (February 22, 2007) -- "'So we saw a lot of electrical activity during the eruption and even some small flashes going from the top of the volcano up into the cloud. That hasn't been noticed before,' Thomas said.

The new evidence suggests that the eruption produced a large amount of electric charge..."
What Would Tesla Say? "Alternate currents, especially of high frequencies, pass with astonishing freedom through even slightly rarefied gases. The upper strata of the air are rarefied. To reach a number of miles out into space requires the overcoming of difficulties of a merely mechanical nature."

A Faraday Cage is an enclosure formed by conductive material. These enclosures are capable of blocking external static and non-static electric fields. The Faraday Cage was named after the English scientist Michael Faraday, who first invented it in 1836 in order to “shield their contents from static electric fields." An electric field surrounds a charged particle, such as an electron or proton.
With the increased threat of a Carrington Flare type event, or even nuclear war, knocking out our power and sensitive electronics, I feel that it is important and necessary to send-out a message to all the do-it-yourselfers out there in order to go over just a few of the many designs available.

The main purpose of this blog is quite simple: to create our own Faraday cage in order to protect our sensitive electronic equipment from the high currents produced by extreme Solar Storms and electromagnetic pulses, which are capable of electromagnetically over-charging Earth’s atmosphere.

Earth receives a regular, predictable amount of electromagnetic energy on a daily basis. However, during times of high Solar Activity or nuclear detonation, the Earth can receive very large doses of energy, which can overload and short circuit fine electronic components rendering them useless.
The energy entering Earth’s atmosphere is always on a direct path to ground. It will take the path of least resistance in all circumstances by traveling through the most conductive material; i.e. high-voltage electric lines, pipelines, tall antennas, and even tall buildings, which all provide a favorable path for the current to flow.

Any electronic equipment connected, in that path should be isolated and surrounded by conductive material, which will allow the electricity to flow around your equipment instead of passing through it. Understanding this concept is key to building a Faraday enclosure that will protect sensitive electronics.

A hollow, copper mesh enclosure will work best, but these can be very expensive. However, any conductive metal will work just fine.

Considered a ‘poor man's’ Faraday Cage, the aluminium building is a great, inexpensive way to store the items you’d like protected. Creating the building with a wood subfloor that is elevated off of the ground is the simplest way.

An Introduction to Faraday Cages

Another nice, cheap way of creating Faraday protection is to use a metal trash can. We simply wrap up our sensitive electronic devices in nonconductive plastic sheeting. Place some wood, or cardboard, in the bottom of the metal trash can and around the sides.

TIP: We do not want ANY of our electronic equipment to touch the exterior walls! Wrapping them in plastic and taping them up will decrease the chances of electromagnetic energy from entering our devices.

Sheds and secondary structures: Start by grounding all four corners of the building with at least four 4ft ground rods, which are driven into the ground and also connected to the exterior corners of the building.
TIP: Remember to ground the containers! In some cases, depending on how much energy is involved, a ground is unnecessary. However, in the event of a large Electromagnetic Pulse or Coronal Mass Ejection impact, a Faraday Cage without a ground will not be able to protect anything, as the energy will have nowhere to go but into the sensitive electronics.

Simply keeping our iPhone and charger (or whatever devices you deem necessary) in a small, metal tin is great way to ensure that they will not be damaged. Ben (S0) will tell anyone willing to listen just how important it is to be aware of what can happen in a major solar event. "It is now law in the state of Maine that public grids be hardened against EMP damage… when I heard this it felt like a small miracle of progressive thinking on the subject. This is a step in the right direction." How progressive is your thinking on this topic?

"I was searching for an answer to the mysterious seismic lulls where the normal factors appeared less relevant for a month at a time once or twice per year.

The findings are far more interesting…"

(0:16) Hey folks, we're going to take a look at some data. Solar Polar Fields since 2003, a chart from Stanford University.
(0:24) We need to be zoomed-in, so eye the years as we scroll up. We'll put the years in the center of the columns to make it easier. 

(0:32) Folks there's Sunspot data, flaring levels, geomagnetic conditions all fringly suggested to potentially affect human existence, but these: the Solar Polar Fields have never been considered important for life on Earth; I strongly disagree.

(0:46) We're going to start at the present and go backwards year by year. Please consider that the most relevant magnetic points here are the peaks, troughs, and when the magnetic lines cross the baseline to switch polarity and when the polar baselines individually cross each other.

(1:03) Keep that in mind while I come to the USGS Website for Earthquake Searches. Going to pull the biggest Earthquakes since 2007 first; 7.8 and higher. I chose 2007 because this is when the Suns Coronal Hole anomalies occurred-breaking from the normal Polar Position at cycle minimum-a point I've belaboured for more than two years now.

(1:25) Well, here they are: all plotted. The list on the left from most recent to earlier down at the bottom. Two of those quakes occurred in 2013 and I'll plot them on the Solar Polar Fields chart, here.

(1:38) May 25th, 2013: 8.3 in Russia as the 'Blue' and 'Red' cross each other, with the 'Red' diving down across the baseline just days later.

(1:47) I would also like to point out some significant planetary geometry: Venus and Mercury, less than two days from conjoining Jupiter as well; complimented by a Full Moon.

(1:56) Our primary Earthquake Factor at this channel is Coronal Holes, and we had 'em both North and South.

(2:03) 8.0 in the Solomon Islands hit February 6th, 2013 at the peak of that mini-cycle. Again, planets conjoining just to the right of the Sun; Coronal Holes both North and South.

(2:16) Three events in 2012, but only two days involved. The latter, October 27th, as the 'Blue' and 'Red' again crossed each other; took the 7.8 in Canada.

(2:27) Saturn was hiding behind the Sun in conjunction and when we tilt around we can see Mars and Jupiter on opposite sides of Earth.

(2:33) It's hard to see without the Field Chart, here, but a crack in those fields did face Earth that day.

(2:39) Other big day in 2012 was April 11th, two 8-pointers. Again, peak of a mini-cycle.

(2:48) Earth was between Mars and Mercury 24 hours earlier and was less than a week until the Saturn opposition of the Sun; this was one of the most diabolical Coronal Holes we'd ever seen…Fields went haywire. 

(3:00) The only quake on the list from 2011 was the big one: Japan, Fukushima. Bit of a double peak more than 2012 and the second matches the Tsunami.

(3:09) One of the biggest Coronal Holes we've ever seen. And the most peculiar planetary geometry: focus on the outer planets all down below…now we're going to zoom-in, all still down below.

(3:22) Folks, despite being the third closest planet to the Sun, Earth was the furthest planet out in this direction over nearly the full 180 degree half-arc; had just seen Mars conjoin the Sun and was just a few days from being in that major line-up across there.

(3:39) Three important days in 2010: here again we see the double-peak, now tremendously significant, but we're going to start with the latest: October 27th, kind of at that double-trough.

(3:51) Hey! I remember those guys, fancy seeing you there. Earth had also just exited a major long range conjunction of Uranus and Jupiter.

(4:01) Back to the double-peak, latter date is April 6th, 2010, which predates the SDO. Luckily Dr. Tony Phillips was watching for us at SpaceWeather.com and has the easiest site archive for past dates data I've ever seen.

(4:14) Anyway, there was a major Coronal Hole that was finishing up it's Earth-facing position and I'm really starting to think that these blokes are stalking me…go away.

(4:24) The 8.8 in Chile needs no introduction, but it does fall on the first 'Peak' of that mini-cycle.

(4:30) Earth-facing Coronal Hole on that day actually spanned across the Equator and King Zeus took the podium conjoining the Sun. I bet you're seeing a pattern, but I'm going for more than coincidence here. 

(4:43) Three more significant days in 2009, you see a break between them there because the USGS put the same Quake on there twice; all three at the bottom of this cycle trough.

(4:53) The latest, on October 7th, is one of the very few not to have a Coronal Hole, but Earth had watched the inner children conjoin 36 hours earlier, while Saturn took the opportunity to jump right in afterwards; and I wonder if any of them even noticed Uranus with multiple birds in one cross-hair.

(5:09) Just days earlier, the 8.1: we had a modest Coronal Hole that day and that was indeed the beginning of Uranus eyeing planets past the blue dot.

(5:19) Months before, on July 15th, we began the trough with Neptune and Jupiter conjoining from Earth; Mercury simultaneously hiding behind the Sun.

(6:40) And this video would be somewhat useless without this: combining the two. Okay, I began the year missing a significant quake; a 7-pointer in Alaska. And as you can see: I missed a few others. Now there are way more factors than the Cosmic ones mentioned, here, including air pressure, sea level, temperature, magma movement, wind direction and just natural releases of pressure.

(7:04) But when you combine Coronal Holes, planetary aspects and energetic flux from Space Weather it begins to paint a picture.
(5:28) 2008 was the odd year out: it was the last time the overall magnetic baseline cross of the central 'Purple' and 'Green' lines were significant for the quaking of the highest magnitude; switching polarities. No Coronal Holes or significant planetary positions though.

(5:45) 2007 was a major year: five matching quakes on four different days.

(5:52) Lets go ahead and plot those four significant days: the latest, December 9th, another cross at the baseline by the central 'Purple' and 'Green' lines to switch polarity.

(6:00) The was a Coronal Hole facing Earth that day and in one more day Mercury and the Sun would conjoin followed a day later by the solidification of a long-range four planet line-up complimented by a New Moon; where Pluto is actually much closer to the alignment than it looks here on JPL.

(6:16) 'Magenta' is September 12th, at the base of the 'Purple' and 'Green' lines. The double-day again: Coronal Hole faced Earth while we were days removed from the Mars opposition of Jupiter; Neptune was geocentrically opposing Venus, all the while Uranus sat directly opposing the Sun bolstered by a New Moon.

(6:35) Less than a month earlier, in 'Orange,' August 14th, at the 'Blue' trough we had a pair of Coronal Holes that day actually. And while the usual suspects still had a whopping four days until they lined up; Saturn was already hitching a rid along Venus' line of sight. 

(6:51) Next we come to April 1st: between 'Red' peaking, but hitting the second 'Blue' peak, down there. Coronal Hole, Mercury conjoined with Uranus.

(7:01) There was also an 8-pointer on January 12th, 2007; that is the ONLY non-fitting Quake of the entire bunch to these Solar Polar Fields. It did, however, have a solid Coronal Hole and one of the familiar suspects.

(7:15) I'll speed this up going through the other years on the chart.

(7:17) 2006 back through 2003, and for the sake of time we'll just look at the biggest: 8.0 and higher. The latest of those, November 15th, 2006: 'Purple' and 'Green' crossed the baseline to switch polarity and we took a 8.3 in the Kuril Islands.

(7:33) Earth had just left one conjunction and headed into that Jupiter-Venus dance once more.

(7:39) 8.0 in Tonga on May 3rd, 2006 and look where they change polarity again; King Zeus again with Earth blocking his view of our star and you guessed it: Earth-facing Coronal Hole.

(7:53) Again, this is the same Quake listed twice for some reason: 8.6 on March 28th, 2005; right along with the second, the higher peak of the mini-cycle. Venus conjoining the Sun with Mercury less than two days away from joining; Coronal Hole leaving, another unmentioned on the South and a third incoming at the same time.

(8:13) Same: 2004 Christmas Tsunami listed twice, lets lump in the 8.1 below from just two days earlier; Earth-facing Coronal Hole and our old friends, yet again.

(8:26) And the first major Quake after the last Solar Pole flip was September 25th, 2003; at the base of the 'Blue' and the 'Purple' in that cycle.

(8:35) Another of the rare ones lacking a Coronal Hole, but with Mars conjoining Uranus…and I suppose you saw Jupiter swing back there too. Spoiler: these four are so close that Jupiter was just seen between Earth and those other two; that's as close to conjunction as you get without actually conjoining.

(8:53) If you were to plot all the 7 magnitude Quakes and higher from 2003 to Now, you'd find that the non-mentioned peaks, troughs, and crosses of the Solar Polar Fields are not going to hold on to to every one of those quakes.

(9:05) But they're capturing far more than their pro-rata share of a otherwise random distribution. The January and March 2009 'peaks' are the best proof of that.

(9:16) The odd Quake lulls, where the Coronal Holes and Planets seem not to matter as much could be plotted on here too, but with slightly lower correlation; still something we're missing when it comes to those curious, rare extended absenteeism's.

(9:28) That full video, with all of those things mentioned, however, take a very long time to compile. And, if I don't mind saying so: I think we've got some good things to go on now. And I know 160,000 plus people who are going to keep doing it along with me. Be safe everyone.

It has been an exciting start to the new year - a 6.6 earthquake in Vanuatu and a solar uptick. Amidst the natural events, the new blog and other updates, it would be easy to forget about Reuters’ article, 'Special Report: Lost hooves, dead cattle before Merck halted Zilmax sales,' which was featured in January 1st, 2014’s morning news video.
"(Reuters) - The U.S. beef industry's dependence on the muscle-building drug Zilmax began unraveling here, on a sweltering summer day, in the dusty cattle pens outside a Tyson Foods Inc slaughterhouse in southeastern Washington state.

…The animals had lost their hooves, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture documents reviewed by Reuters...The next day, the hottest day of the month, two more animals with missing hooves arrived by truck. Again, the animals were destroyed, the documents show.

The animals' feet were 'basically coming apart,' said Keith Belk, a professor of animal science at Colorado State University.

...In the weeks before the cattle were shipped to Tyson's slaughterhouse, outside the city limits of Pasco, all had been fed Merck & Co Inc's profit-enhancing animal feed additive, Zilmax..."

On our Saturday sessions of 'Fly on the Wall,' I have discussed the significance of things like bovine growth hormones for dairy cattle which cause excessive mastitis in the cows.

This also increases the amount of growth hormones found in the milk - this is why some children balloon to outrageous sizes (you see them on day-time talk shows), while young girls are 'maturing' at younger and younger ages.

Let's look at two more man-made follies in the name of agriculture and medicine; Roundup-Resistant GMOs and Accelerated Vaccine Schedules.

GMOs - The Round-Up Resistance Gene:

Simple Explanation: They found a bacteria that Roundup can't kill. They took the relevant gene from that bacteria and put it in our food. This likely causes the cells in the food to express minute bacterial characteristics that slowly and subtly affect us over time as we eat the food through constant, light stress.

Complex Hypothesis Basis: The gateways for most bacterial cells are the anionic ( - charge) membrane proteins, most notably, lipopolysaccharides and teichoic acids. The simplest example of this is how those negative proteins attract Na+, K+ and other positive ions that are the food of the bacteria. The gene inserted to prevent Round-Up affect likely affected the membrane gateways for chemical interaction, which are those membrane proteins.

The problem is that these proteins are endotoxins, and part of what triggers our immune response - fever, fatigue, general stress on all of our bodily systems. This is good in a way because it stimulates our body to seek-out and neutralize, or destroy those cells, but what if our body can't find the endotoxins?

One human defense peptide is LL-37, which has a strongly cationic ( + charge) face that seeks out these negatively charged bacterial membranes. However, if these membrane proteins are inserted into zwitterionic (net neutral) membranes, our cationic peptides simply cannot find them, thereby leaving our immune systems to stay on, activated, and stressing out our other systems. Ex: Excess LL-37 can damage red blood cells and has even been associated with ovarian tumors.

Confirmation would require GLP testing with rigorous design controls. In the meantime, we can clearly draw a connection between known, accepted science, and the reality of what genetic modifications do beyond their intended results.

Accelerated Vaccine Schedules - For those who have "heard the rumors…"

Autism, brain damage, cancer, nervous system disorders, etc… the amount of very real consequences that have been rumored to be associated with vaccines is large and growing.

The reality is this: 1) more children are being diagnosed with these diseases in short periods of time after receiving these vaccinations, and 2) the vast VAST majority of children receiving vaccines handle them without any significant problems.

So, if it seems like most parents think nothing of these rumors…you can't really blame them. I recently spent some time with a former research associate of mine who has a 3-year-old boy; he had done considerable amounts of research and made one comment that shifted my perceptions of this situation, especially given what has been written here about GMOs.

What do they tell you is supposed to happen after vaccination? They tell you that a child should get a little sick, perhaps accompanied by a fever, and that it is completely normal and expected - often alongside an assurance to the effect of "children get sick all the time."

Your child gets sick because the structure of the pathogen is maintained in the serum- it is not going to multiply and take over your child's system, but the body responds to the invader, which is the entire point of the vaccination. These are technically "stresses on the system," which most children overcome without issue, but there is a heightened risk with high fevers in young children (all parents know this story).

Compared to when I was a young child (I'm only 29) the kids are getting more vaccinations and getting them earlier in their development, when the risk is highest - this is why we describe the vaccination schedules as accelerated, and why it might be such an obvious mistake. 

As with GMOs, this subject certainly requires further study, but the dots being connected here are the result of the simplest logic. Take what we know, what is undisputed and immutable fact among human science, and just put it all together. My friend decided to take every opportunity to delay all vaccinations for his child as long as possible, but to ultimately get the vaccinations. His child is developing well-ahead of 'normal'… whatever that means.

Cattle falling apart, growth hormones, subtle immune stressors - if you think this seems "all over the place" then we share our surveys of the landscape. However, the number of topics and sub-issues extend far beyond the points brought up here, and often involving more complex interdisciplinary science; we chose three narrow issues. This author happens to have spent a significant time studying pathogen membranes, otherwise he would be left with the vague uncertainties on these topics that many are left with now, as he is with the vast majority of science that the masses are forced to trust to those behind the curtains.

Residents living around One WTC have been reporting strange sounds coming from the building, which is still under construction, on windy nights for a little over a year now.

A local news article published by PIX11 on December 3rd, 2013 points out an important anecdote, "Animal New York reports that residents began hearing the strange howling, whistling sounds during Hurricane Sandy last year."

The most recent reports came in late November, early December. New York City's Port Authority has weighed in on the subject:
NEW YORK (PIX11)The Port Authority, which owns the World Trade Center site, says the noise is probably just the wind and far from paranormal.

A rep for the authority told PIX11 that the agency cannot confirm if any of the reported noises are in fact even coming from One World Trade or any of the other buildings in the area.

The building is still under construction, the rep stressed, and equipment moving in and out of giant, open shafts could in theory create a 'wind tunnel.' Four World Trade Center is also an active construction site, with lots of space for wind to move through, the spokesperson said."

Hurricane Sandy Video Published on Oct. 29th, 2012:

In the article 'One World Trade Center Makes Strange, Ghostly Sounds in Lower Manhattan (VIDEOS),' published in The Huffington Post, author Jane Janeczko goes into a bit more detail about the most recent video (shown below) and the resident who filmed it.

A pattern is being noticed, "When it gets windy in Lower Manhattan, residents report hearing a strange, high-pitched, ghostly sound from the top of One World Trade Center."
"The Huffington Post - Kenny Cummings, who lives a few blocks away from One WTC, told Tribeca Citizen in an email that he first noticed the eerie whistling during Hurricane Sandy, and most recently heard the noise early on November 27:

'At 3:15 a.m. Wednesday morning, I awoke to the sound. It was slightly different in timbre, with two tones this time...I realized it was the Trade Center. Outside it was raining but the trees were calm. I can only imagine at that height the weather is different. I’m sure all of downtown hears this—it’s unmistakable and very chilling. I had to get up and record it. [You can hear it especially well around :20.] It seemed to calm down about 5 a.m.'"

Taken at 3:15 A.M. Wednesday November 27th, 2013:

A 2012 article from The Daily Mail Online, 'Superstorm Sandy turned World Trade Center into an æolian harp...'  used an interesting anecdote, "The storm, which included gusts of 80 mph, briefly turned the tower in an enormous concrete version of an æolian harp, a musical instrument played by the wind," which is just begging for a quick Wiki look-up:

"Builders of pipe organs have included stops intended to imitate the sound and timbre of the aeolian harp. German builders were the first to include such a stop from the 1820s. The Aeolian Harp stop is not a harp—it is simply a rank of pipes using a low wind pressure and voiced to imitate the sound of the real instrument. It is therefore classified as a 'string' stop. These stops are amongst the softest found on pipe organs."

Seamless Transition: Introduction to INFRASOUND

In the 1960's a French robotics researcher, Vladimir Gavreau, and his team, "we are told, performed some pioneering experiments into the anomaly of infrasonic waves that were directional in 'contradiction of a universally accepted acoustic law which states that low frequency sounds emitted by relatively small source propagate in all directions.'"

In the Google Book 'Sonic Warefare: Sound, Affect, and the Ecology of Fear' by Steve Goodman, the author goes into a little detail about Infrasound and some of the first experimental research on the subject:
"After accidentally experiencing nausea in his lab with his research team (owing to unintended vibrations leaking from industrial machinery), Gavreau became obsessed by harnessing infrasonic resonance to design sonic weapons (usually in the form of huge pipe devices.)

After another experiment, caught in the vibratory 'envelope of death,' Gavreau and team allegedly suffered sustained internal spasms as their organs hit critical resonance frequencies. It was these strange physiological anomalies, generated by inaudible vibrations, that inspired his research into infrasonic acoustic guns.

The key notion was that directional inaudible sound at certain resonant frequencies 'acting directly on the body' could produce 'intense friction between internal organs, resulting in a severe irritation of nerve endings.'"

In the article 'The Creepy Scientific Explanation Behind Ghost Sightings' published in Cracked Online on October 26th, 2013 the author, Jack Mendoza, did some excellent paraphrasing and application of research into Infrasound which is worth taking a look at:

"Gavreau started researching the phenomenon by holding vibrating pipes next to clueless assistants. We'll never know what excuse he used when they turned around and asked him why their ears were bleeding, but one way or another Gavreau soon realized that a vibrating pipe of the right length and girth can cause a number of unpleasant effects ranging from mild irritation to serious pain.

What he had discovered...was infrasound. It's noise at a low enough frequency that you don't consciously hear it, but your ears still sense it. The process of receiving sensory input without your conscious mind understanding where it's coming from wreaks havoc with your emotions. Specifically, researchers found that sounds between 7 and 19 Hz it could induce fear, dread or panic.

They did an experiment where acoustic scientists sneaked in low frequency sounds at a live concert. Since scientists love nothing more than inducing feelings of fear and terror in unsuspecting citizens, most of the concert goers had no idea what was going on. As a result one minute they were enjoying some sweet tunes while the next a feeling of dread invaded their hearts, crushing all hope and happiness. At the end of the experiment approximately 22 percent of the people involved in the experiment reported feelings of unexplainable dread, chills and depression when infrasound was blasted into the crowd.

...mother nature is creating this type of low frequency vibration all the time. Volcanos, earthquakes, strong ocean waves and even winds hitting the hillside in just the right spot can create infrasound. Even animals can create it, and tigers are particularly well known as a source. The frequency of a tiger's roar is around 18Hz -- right in that range we mentioned earlier."
Science Daily Quick Quote on InfraSound:
"'Humans can only hear some of the sounds that tigers use to communicate,' says von Muggenthaler. 'Humans can hear frequencies from 20 hertz to 20,000 hertz, but whales, elephants, rhinos, and tigers can produce sounds below 20 hertz.' This low-pitched sound, called 'infrasound,' can travel long distances permeating buildings, cutting through dense forests, and even passing through mountains. The lower the frequency, the farther the distance the sound can travel. Scientists believe that infrasound is the missing link in studying tiger communication."


The Cracked article concludes with a relevant statement, which can be extended to the WTC One 'chilling noises' phenomena produced by windy nights, "So now we have a phenomenon that occurs in nature, is invisible, is imperceptible on a conscious level, but can spontaneously make you feel irrational fear, even if you're sitting in an empty room."

In the paper, 'A Review of Published Research on Low Frequency Noise and its Effects' written by Dr. Geoff Leventhall, Dr. Peter Pelmear and Dr. Stephen Benton, the authors have compiled a impressive 88 page Literature Review of Infrasound, a few pull quotes:

"...infrasound has long been a respected area of study in meteorology, where the frequencies range from as low as one cycle in 1000 seconds up to a few cycles per second. Large arrays of infrasound microphones detect low frequencies originating in atmospheric effects, meteorites, supersonic aircraft, explosions etc. There is also a worldwide system of about 60 infrasound arrays, which are part of the monitoring for the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (P.5).

2.1 Noise and sound. Noise and sound are physically the same, differences arising in their acoustic quality as perceived by listeners. This leads to a definition of noise as undesired sound, whilst physically both noise and sound are similar acoustic waves, carried on oscillating particles in the air. Sound is detected by the ear in a mechanical process, which converts the sound waves to vibrations within the ear (P.6).

2.2 Frequency and wavelength. The frequency of a sound is the number of oscillations which occur per second (Hz), denoted, for example, as 100Hz. Sound travels in air at about 340ms-1, but this velocity varies slightly with temperature (P.6).

2.4 Low frequency noise and infrasound. The frequency range of infrasound is normally taken to be below 20Hz and that of audible noise from 20Hz to 20,000Hz. However, frequencies below 20Hz are audible, illustrating that there is some lack of clarity in the interpretations of infrasonic and audible noise. Although audibility remains below 20Hz, tonality is lost below 16-18Hz, thus losing a key element of perception. Low frequency noise spans the infrasonic and audible ranges and may be considered as the range from about 10Hz to 200Hz (P.7).

2.6 Infrasound. There are a number of misconceptions about infrasound, such as that infrasound is not audible. As will be shown later, frequencies down to a few hertz are audible at high enough levels. Sometimes, although infrasound is audible, it is not recognised as a sound and there is uncertainty over the detection mechanism. Very low frequency infrasound, from one cycle in, say 1000 seconds (0.001Hz) to several cycles a second are produced by meteorological and similar effects and, having been present during all of our evolution, are not a hazard to us (P.8)."

S0, putting together all the pieces of the puzzle - Eyes open, no fear:

Based on anecdotal evidence we can see how Once WTC is like an over-size aeolian harp, or a series of pipes with unfinished openings containing scattered pieces  of construction equipment. Residents reporting animal noises, howling and the 'chilling' effects this has on a part of the population is consistent with accounts of Infrasound occurring in Nature. I would like to leave the reader with some caveats about Infrasound via the WHO, from the Literature Review quoted above:
The World Health Organization is one of the bodies which recognizes the special place of low frequency noise as an environmental problem. Its publication on Community Noise (Berglund et al., 2000) makes a number of references to low frequency noise, some of which are as follows:

• " It should be noted that low frequency noise, for example, from ventilation systems can disturb rest and sleep even at low sound levels"

• "For noise with a large proportion of low frequency sounds a still lower guideline (than 30dBA) is recommended"

• "It should be noted that a large proportion of low frequency components in a noise may increase considerably the adverse effects on health"

• "The evidence on low frequency noise is sufficiently strong to warrant immediate concern" (P.5)

(0:11) Tonight is not the night to ignore the 'Link List' by the way; interested parties will lack free-time for at least a day. 
(0:17) Focal point is: Cosmic Rays. If true, this news strengthens the arguments for Cosmic Climate Forcing; especially given that Earth's Magnetic Shield is weakening according to every official source.

(0:29) I say, 'if true,' because I have previously examined the arguments on both sides of this; even among the leaders in the field there is much disagreement on Cosmic Rays and clouds.

(0:40) But a point where everyone is on the same page is this: Solar Activity and strong Magnetic Fields associated with it block Galactic Radiation.

(0:48) This is an old University of Delaware page, but it's perfect for this example: up top we have Solar Cycles, high activity means strong fields and emissions. And when that Magnetic Shield weakens during Solar Minimum: the Cosmic Rays, below, penetrate much more.

(1:05) Even comparing Cycle to Cycle, look how much stronger one Cycle is than another and how much more the Cosmic Rays plummeted during the stronger Solar Activity; this correlation is incontrovertible.

(1:18) Bit of review: Earth's Magnetic Shield has a partner in failure, and his cohort is our Star. When two National Solar Observatory Physicists suggested our next Cycle could have no Sunspots many ignored it.

(1:30) But, the pattern and indicators of a Magnetic Shutdown Cycle to Cycle, like the Dalton or even Mini-Maunder-like Minima is now also incontrovertible.

(1:40) We are at the point of a Solar Pole Flip now, the Cycle has almost peaked. It is in-progress, so to speak, we know the Southern Pole flipped in 2012 right there and if it's any indication of what's coming: the weakening will continue.

(1:53) While the North is on the Southern-side, right now, it does appear to be headed back up and, therefore, not yet completely flipped. What would erasing that delicate Cosmic Ray balance on Earth do to our Climate? I'm not sure, but with Earth's Field weakening 10% [15%] since the 19th Century we are seeing two shields fade, with one of them: the more important one for Cosmic Rays potentially going on hiatus for a while.

(2:16) I find it odd that Cosmic Rays are not a greater focal point in Main Stream Climate Science. This doesn't belong hidden in paid journals, occasionally summarised on Science pages days to weeks later: this is what everyone should know.

(2:30) Anyway, Sunspots are trying to make a come-back; we'll see how they're doing in the A.M.

(2:34) It appears the Coronal Hole Stream from the departed northern opening arrived full two days later than I imagined; so, not surprisingly the post-density spike's speed-ramp is not a tremendous one.

'News Addition: Earth Wind Map (Dec. 15, 2013)'

(0:01) Hey Folks, quick addition to this morning's news, which is the first link right below this video in the about tab. Every once in awhile we make a new connection or get a new way to look at our world.

(0:12) Sometimes it's simply a link sent by a thoughtful 0bserver; other times we happen to stumble upon something new in our daily checks.
(0:19) Recent examples from iSWA include the 'Combined Field Cygnet,' which we use to refine the Geoeffectiveness of Coronal Holes. One day this and a number of other new Cygnets just popped up like the 'Ovation Prime' before them.

(0:33) Sometimes a breakthrough comes when you realize that what you've been starring at for a year actually tells you something you never expected to track; the 'Solar Wind Scape,' here, is used to gauge Coronal Hole power.

(0:44) One of the biggest game changers was the 'Colorized Magnetogram'; the previous black and white showed polarity in general, but gave not gradient. And now our ability to classify Sunspots on our own is ten-fold better.

(0:58) One example of a link just sent to me out of the blue, that found a regular home in our news, was the US Wind Map. This allowed us to show unprecedented visual correlation between surface pressure and wind drive on the temperature and storm convergence lines.

(0:01) Alright Guys, so I just watched a video; it's called: 'The Current Weak Solar Cycle and Its Consequences - Press Conference' it was posted on the YouTube Channel of the American Geophysical Union, better known as AGU.

(0:16) It was published on December 11th, 2013, I'm looking at it at about 3pm on December 12th, just a day later. Now what this was is they just basically posted a recording of a four Scientist panel, press conference or web conference, as it were.

(0:42) Two of the scientists were from NASA: one from Langley, one from Goddard. Another from the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory and Leif Svalgaard one of our favorites out of Stanford.

To Summarize Nat Gopalswamy's points:

-Reduced total pressure in the Heliosphere makes the CMEs expand more.

-Expansion of CMEs results in reduced Magnetic Field strength inside CMEs, which leads to weaker Geomagnetic Storms.

-The reduced magnetic field in the heliosphere does not allow the shocks to accelerate particles to high energies, leading to low-level particle events.
(1:15) I [Nat Gopalswamy] am briefly going to discuss about the Solar Cycle 24 and it's consequences to the heliosphere. We all know that the Sun is in it's 'Maximum' phase, but the maximum phase is weak, as you can see from the Sunspot number this is Cycle 23 and Cycle 24; the Sunspot Number has significantly declined.

(1:42) And the reason, people think, is because the Polar Field in the previous cycle was smaller and the Polar Field is supposed to feed the Sunspots coming into the next cycle. 

(1:55) This can also be seen in microwave emission from Sunspot regions, that has also declined, and we are in the Maximum Phase, with the North Pole already finished it's Maximum Phase and the South Pole in the midst.

(2:10) So what is the consequence of this weak Cycle? The best way to look at it is to look at the strength of Geomagnetic Storms that happened since 1957.

(2:21) For example: there are many Solar Cycles here, from Cycle 19 to Cycle 24, and in Cycle 24 the number of Major Geomagnetic Storms, measured by the index known as Dst, is very small and also the strength of the Storm is also relatively small.

(2:41) For example: the March 1989 Storm, which caused a big Blackout in Quebec is really huge and the Halloween Storm is here and compared to those two we have we almost have barely any major storms.

(2:57) This is a plot of Solar Energetic Particle Events (SEPs) and this is another source of Space Weather and again from Cycle 20 to 24 the number of the big events is again very small, only three of them more than a thousand units.

(3:16) So you have weaker Geomagnetic Storms and weaker Solar Energetic Particle Events. Why is this?

(3:24) You know these two Space Weather Events: mainly Geomagnetic Storms and Energetic Particles are caused by Coronal Mass Ejections or CMEs. The CME rate itself is not very small in this Cycle. You can see the rate is between 3 and 4 during the Maximum Phase, which is similar to the last Cycle. So, what's happening?

(3:51) One of the clues to the behavior of Cycle 24 came from the fact that all the Energetic Particle Events of Cycle 24 were associated with Halo CMEs; you know Halo CMEs are those which appear to surround the Sun, because the expand very fast early on.

(4:11) So, that means there is something to do with the width of the Coronal Mass Ejections, that is the size we see in the sky. So, we looked at the width of the CMEs from Cycle 23 and Cycle 24 and we found that the Cycle 24 CMEs are bigger for a given speed; as you can see from this.

(4:32) So if you look at 1000 km/s CMEs, these are the ones which cause the Space Weather Events, you see that the Cycle 24 events: the size is bigger by about 38%. So that means the CMEs are expanding more than usual.

(4:54) So why are the CMEs expanding more than usual? When we measured the pressure in the Heliosphere, using Satellites such as ACE and WIND, we found that the pressure is reduced in this Cycle by about 40% compared to the previous cycle.

(5:13) Of course, we cannot directly measure the pressure near the Sun, but we can extrapolate what we measure at 1AU near the Sun and we find that there is a similar reduction of pressure near the Sun.

(5:24) So, when CMEs are ejected into this milder, low-pressure Heliosphere then they puff up. When the CMEs expand more, the Magnetic Field inside the CMEs has lower strength; so when you have lower strength of Magnetic Field then they cause milder Geomagnetic Storms.

(5:44) And the lower Magnetic Field in the Heliosphere also contributes to lower efficiency of particle acceleration in the Heliosphere; that's why we have no big Energetic Particle Events, although the number of Energetic Particle Events itself has not decreased significantly.

Some Important Clues:
-SEPs are known to be associated with shocks driven by coronal mass ejections (CMEs), but there is not obviously fewer CMEs this cycle.

-The Solar Wind flux and Interplanetary Magnetic Field strength are weaker in Cycle 24 compared to previous Cycles.

(6:40) My presentation follows basically right on the heels of what Nat was saying there right at the very end.
(6:47) I'm [Joe Giacalone] a Theorist primarily and so my talk yesterday in this session was devoted to trying to understand what it is about this weak Solar Cycle that it can tell us about how particles are accelerated at these shockwaves; maybe to explain why we don't have the very large events and quite frankly Nat summarized it very nicely in just a couple of sentences at the end of his talk, but I would like to illustrate this with a few slides as well. 

(7:18) The important clues that we know for sure: one is that we know that these large SEP Events are created by shockwaves driven by Coronal Mass Ejections; that's pretty well established and I don't think there's a lot of argument on that point.

(7:36) There's not noticeably a fewer number of CMES and, in fact, depending on how you count them there could be more; I was hearing talks in yesterday's session that there's actually more CMEs. It's difficult to count the number of CMEs, but it's not obviously fewer and in fact quite probably more.

(7:58) The CMEs, are they faster? Again, it depends on how you count them. Some seem to be a little faster, but again there's no obvious trend in that regard.

(8:08) One thing for sure though is that the Interplanetary Magnetic Field, as Nat was pointing out, is weaker; that's known, that's been reported. There's been some news items: ACE Advanced Composition Explorer Spacecraft has a news item out that has a report on this: the Interplanetary Magnetic Field is definitely weaker and we know that. 

(8:28) The Solar Wind Flux is also weaker, so these are things that we know; so, how does this affect particle acceleration?

(8:36) Okay, being a theorist I tried to put this down onto a slide…the figure on the left is a standard cartoon illustration of a CME in the grey, shaded region: that's a Coronal Mass Ejection, which is a giant magnetic flux rope with entrained plasma that comes from the Sun.

(9:08) The line out in front of it that's arched is a shockwave, driven by that CME and then the other curved lines with all sorts little wiggles that sort of look like their rotating around into Space that is called the Interplanetary Magnetic Field, which is a Parker Spiral Magnetic Field.

(9:25) And the particles are accelerated at the shock, those little dots are particles accelerated by the shock. So if I blow up the little region there close to the shock-that's that little yellow figure with the blue lines-that's what's going on: particles are going back and forth across this shock being accelerated.

(9:40) This is a well know mechanism, it was discovered in the late 1970's called Diffusive Shock Acceleration. Okay, so that's the standard picture.

(9:50) In the current Solar Cycle, when the magnetic field is weaker the particles are not trapped near the shock as effectively, and there are equations that describe this and that was in my talk yesterday, but basically in it's simplest form: the particles are just not as effectively trapped, they're going much farther up-stream and down-stream of the Shockwave and it takes a lot longer for them to get to very high energies.

(10:15) So, the upshot is: is if I'm plotting a spectrum, the flux of particles versus energy, the lower energy part is not going to be affected too much because that's just depending on what your source is, the Solar Wind is a little bit less and so the vertical axis might go down a little bit, but by and large the biggest effect is that the weaker Magnetic Field leads to a lower energy cut-off.

(10:40) And so the largest events are the ones at the high energy end and so you're just not having as many because you can't effectively trap these particles.

(10:49) So that's my main point, now I wanted to take my last 50 seconds and make one additional point: and now I'm switching to Galactic Cosmic Rays. The top panel is Neutron Monitor, Galactic Cosmic Rays (it's a proxy for Galactic Cosmic Rays).

(11:03) During the last Solar Minimum, as I think most people are aware, the Galactic Cosmic Rays reached an all-time record high; that's in that little pink circle up at the top, the largest at the top axis and the Sunspots Numbers on the bottom.

(11:16) And the Galactic Cosmic Rays actually have been reduced during the Solar Maximum, when the Sun is more active Galactic Cosmic Rays can't come in as effectively; so it is in fact reduced.

(11:29) But you can see it's not nearly as reduced as previous Maximum; so the Galactic Cosmic Rays have gone down, yes, but not as far as in the past. And the only reason I want to bring this up and I want to show this as my last slide as I'm running out of time here.

(11:44) My colleague Dick Maywaldt, who is in the audience, has prepared, he has converted the Neutron Monitor Galactic Cosmic Ray counts, in that top panel, to a dose equivalent felt by an astronaut felt behind a certain amount of shielding.

Back to S0's Notes:

(5:39) And this got me wondering: what happens if we get a big Gamma Burst before the Sun wakes up again.

(5:50) Right around this time they were describing how this could be a problem for trips to Mars and how if you wanted to go to Mars you should probably leave pretty soon because it is Solar Max right now and we're just holding back the Cosmic Rays…
(6:04) And if we get, and these are my words-kind of taking theirs a bit further than they were willing to-we expect that during this next Solar Minimum that the Cosmic Rays are probably going to reach about that all time high where they were last time, you know, unless of course we get an uncharacteristic Solar Minimum that has a lot of Sunspots, but I don't believe anybody believes that that's going to happen.

(6:33) And just as I was wondering: what about that next big Gamma Burst? And I have to admit that I was wondering that much through their discussion for why this was a problem for Mars. They start talking about the effects of these things on the very upper-most atmosphere, from 100 to 250 km up; this is known as the Thermosphere.

(6:54) Now they're talking about how Ultra Violet Light and Solar Wind Particles enter the Upper Atmosphere; and CO2 & NO cool by removing Energy. 

(7:05) People should remember this, caught a lot of people off guard when we talked about this at length, what it means and what it doesn't mean; because it was taken out of context quite a few times.

(7:17) The fact that a NASA article stated, which is not really news to those who follow these things that: CO2 and NO are the two most efficient Thermospheric Coolants in our Atmosphere.

(7:33) Essentially, they give a pretty good explanation of a little bit higher detail, but essentially: we have two trillion kilowatt hours less of energy up there than we did in 2002 or about 10% the entire energy usage of the United States.

(7:54) So it's a very, very significant drop in Energy in the upper atmosphere that we have right now and they describe this as a substantial natural variability tied to the Sun. 

(8:05) They also talk about how all the CO2 that we've put up might be expected to do a significant amount of cooling up in the Thermosphere in the not too distant future.

(8:15) Now, Leif taught last. And he showed that weakening Polar Field chart that we absolutely love, that I've playfully pointed to as the potential indicator of a Solar Magnetic Shutdown being a possibility in terms of Sunspot production, Polar Field Strength and basically just returning to another significant minimum in the Sun, as has been predicted by some and we've shown a number of different sources.

(8:51) They certainly do not go that far, they stop well short of that; they do talk about how big events can still happen during these times of weak activity. Big flaring, big CMEs, and big Solar Energetic Particle Events.

(9:09) We've even seen, recently, the big CMEs come from Filament Eruptions; you don't need any Flaring at all to have a Filament Eruption. In fact, the Filament Eruption: it's wake, what's left is what actually Flares.

(9:28) Even though they stop short of discussing anything remotely close to an Ice Age, these are the Experts. And, just like I have been harping on: that 'C(Lie)mate #3' was key, because it's no longer just me saying this, in fact, it never really was. It was all of us watching together and coming to these same conclusions; messaging each other and commenting and corroborating and cooperating.

(10:01) And now it appears that we weren't the only ones doing this: the experts, the people who in the end everybody will listen to are saying the same things that we've been saying for over a year now.

(10:19) This is quite incredible, I definitely recommend that you guys take a look at this video; if you're just interested in that bit about CO2 that was about the 17 or 18 minute mark, but it's just about a half hour. I highly recommend you watching it all and even the last ten minutes is just questions.

(10:39) So, top recommendation. It is what it is, folks. Wake up son.

[Dennis McKenna, PhD - Ethnopharmacologist]:

(1:40) One of the things, besides what it does, one of the things about DMT that always fascinated me was the fact that: it's such a simple molecule.

[Dave Nichols, PhD - Medicinal Chemist]:

(1:51) DMT stands for Dimethyltryptamine, N,N-Dimethyltryptamine. If you actually look at the ring structure of DMT itself, you only have really four positions that you can attach things to. So, you can make Diethyl, or dipropyl; there are some other types of carbon chains you can attach to that end that do give you compounds that do have activity, but very different from DMT.

[Dennis McKenna, PhD - Ethnopharmacologist]:

(2:20) Biosynthetically it's two steps from tryptophan, right, two trivial enzymatic steps from tryptophan. Well, tryptophan is an amino acid, of course, and it's everywhere. So, all organisms have tryptophan. And all organisms have the two key enzymes that lead to the synthesis of DMT. And these enzymes are very ancient enzymes, they're all over the place, they're again part of basic metabolism; so theoretically anything could synthesize DMT.

(3:02) DMT is astonishingly, widely available in plants and animals all around the world, but so far nobody really knows why it's there or what it's function is.

“It is well known that the most sensitive sections of the human brain, influenced by negative factors of an environment, are hypothalamus (a region in the upper part of the brainstem that acts as a relay to the pituitary gland; it controls body temperature, circadian cycles, sleep, moods, hormonal body processes, hunger, and thirst) and cerebral cortex of the big hemispheres of the human brain (Kopanev and Shakula, 1985).”  - Allahverdiyeva, Aysel A. & Babayev, Elchin S.

(3:28) The conventional wisdom 30-40 years ago was that these things had no real function, they were just sort of physiological noise but that's a very naive understanding. And what we now understand is that these secondary compounds are, in a sense, the language of the plants; these are messenger molecules. This is what plants use to mediate their relationships with other organisms in the environment.

(3:57) Why is it that human beings' Central Nervous Systems are wired to receive this experience? Must be that there is important information to be learned.

(4:25) So it really fits in with the notion that DMT may be the common molecular language, resonant language among all living beings on this planet and maybe others as well. I can't think of a more powerful tool to explore the whole questions of: 'what is consciousness?'

“Studies show (see, for example, the following papers and references therein: Breus and Rapoport, 2003; Palmer et al., 2006) that during periods of severe geomagnetic disturbances, number of hospitalized patients with nervous diseases significantly increases; cerebral insults, different paroxysmal conditions, nervous disturbance disorders and suicidal attempts are more frequent, and psycho-neurological diseases become aggravated.”

“Gurfinkel’ et al. (1998) showed that during geomagnetic storms, number of cases of myocardial infarction increases 2.5 times, number of acute cerebral insults – 2 times, angina pectoris and cardiac arrhythmia – 1.5 times, and deaths – 1.2 times, with respect to periods without geomagnetic storms.” - Allahverdiyeva, Aysel A. & Babayev, Elchin S.

"In the 1950’s the German scientist W. Schumann described the existence of a Global Electromagnetic Resonance, an extremely low frequency (ELF), which is part of the Earth’s electromagnetic fields.

This low frequency, now called the Schumann Resonances, is generated by tropical thunderstorms and is a mix of resonant modes located within the resonant cavity between Earth’s surface and the Ionosphere.

The measured daytime spectrum modes show a peak at a fundamental frequency of about 7.83 Hz and broad resonant peaks typically at 14, 20, 26, 33, 39, 45 and 51 Hz respectively.

The most common geomagnetic frequency is 7.83 Hz and a wide range of scientific researchers have shown that plants, animals and humans living in such an environment are known to benefit from it."

RE: 'DMT: The Spirit Molecule'

[Rick Strassman, MD - Psychiatrist]:

Excerpts from the lecture 'No More Secrets':

(00:34) Those flashing patterns you see there are the actual activity of a real brain. We've taken an EEG, quantified it, and we can actually see the activity taking place over the left and right hemispheres; the yellow and red that you see is effectively what's going on as a person is sitting quietly.

(00:50) There's micro states going on here being recreated every 20 milliseconds 50 times a second. There are about four basic micro-static patterns which are the building blocks to consciousness...

(01:38) Are we all connected? The answer is: yes. We are all immersed in the Earth's Magnetic Field, the human species is about 7 billion conductive brains all sharing this field. Think of 7 billion wires all immersed in the Earth's Magnetic Field; this field contains enough energy to store the experience of every human being who has ever lived.

(02:17) In fact, the strength of the Magnetic Field induced in every brain, right now you're being induced…put it this way: you're immersed in the Earth's Magnetic Field, it's penetrating through your brain, through your body and in fact the strength of the Magnetic Field induced in every brain by the Earth's Magnetic Field when all brains are considered is almost identical to the strength that each brain generates.

(02:41) Your brain generates in order of about a pico Tesla, which is about a trillionth of a Tesla, much weaker than the Earth's Magnetic Field, but that's the operational intensity. But what does it mean?

(02:53) It means simply this: such convergence produces the conditions that allow Global Resonance and the possibility of a Human Hologram. That is 7 billion brains basically immersed in the Earth's Magnetic Field all with similar intensities, the whole equal to the sum, and the sum equal to the individual; the individual equal to sum and that sets up the conditions for a hologram.

(03:19) Calculations suggest that the time required for an event in one human brain to diffuse into all other human brains on this planet would be about ten minutes; and it would occur primarily during dreams or during altered states.

(3:34) In other words you can actually calculate it; 7 billion brains is an easy calculation. One brain, something you're thinking about right now, how long would it take if we're all connected to diffuse to every other human brain on this planet? About 10 minutes and optimally during dreaming, when the right hemisphere is dominant.

(3:52) So here's how it would look in terms of an animation, effectively, there's a representation of the 7 billion brains, almost 7 billion. And ultimately this connection would take place over time in roughly about 10 to 15 minutes particularly if you were dreaming because there is something very different about the right side of the brain, the right hemisphere. 

(6:14) I was drawn to the Pineal Gland, which is a very small organ in the center of the brain, which has always been an object of interest, and even veneration, for a lot of Esoteric physiological disciplines.

(6:29) I thought, you know, it wasn't totally crazy to presume a Pineal site of origin of DMT, which will fit in nicely with my theory that the Pineal was somehow involved in naturally occurring mystical states.

(6:48) This hypothesis proposes that the Pineal Gland at certain times when it's under specific stress or stimulation it releases a significant amount of this hormone DMT and it's that hormone that facilitates the entering and exiting of the soul in the body; this is what the Jewish Sage mystics have been describing in a coded language for literally thousands of years.

[Rick Strassman, MD - Psychiatrist]:

(7:23) Through meditation, through fasting, chanting, any number of techniques there might be a burst of endogenous DMT that was correlated with mystical and near death experiences.

(7:36) I had this theory that there is a big similarity between psychedelics and experiences that were possible with a lot of meditation. And that was one of the original findings that lead me to start looking for a spirit molecule, a compound in the brain that elicited mystical experiences.

“Observed prevalence of changes in the right cerebral hemisphere proves the importance (‘‘interest’’) of the right hemisphere. According to Pereverzeva (1980), activation of the right hemisphere is accompanied by negative tinge of emotional reactions. Based on this fact, one can assume that during significant disturbances of geomagnetic conditions the negative emotional background of a person is amplified. This assumption is also proven by the results of the correlation analysis focused on strengthening cortical connections in the right cortical hemisphere and their short circuit on temporal sections, while, on geomagnetically quiet days, a profile of correlation interrelations has reflected weak internal and inter-hemispheric connections.”  - Allahverdiyeva, Aysel A. & Babayev, Elchin S.
[Steven Barker, PHD - Pharmacologist]:

(8:08) I think there may be a role for DMT in explaining any number of hallucinatory phenomena that man has experienced throughout his history.

(8:21) Creativity, imagination, dream-states, changes that occur due to isolation, trauma, starvation…all of which produce hallucinatory phenomena.

(8:32) These hallucinatory phenomena are explainable by the presence of compounds known to produce hallucinations. And the only compounds that we know of that are capable of doing this are the class of compounds known as hallucinogens.
“Negative influence of the geomagnetic field disturbances on human health is well displayed by the nervous system. Geomagnetic storms, as any stress factor, influence the functional state of humans and as such, impact the central nervous (the brain and spinal cord) system. This system behaves as a sensitive screen, perceiving even weak disturbance fluctuations (oscillations) in the environment.  Both the central and the vegetative nervous systems of a human being are sensitive and responsive to geomagnetic disturbances. (Baevsky, 1979; Mikhailova, 2001).”

“...the threshold of convulsive (spasmodic) readiness of the human brain is reduced; this is particularly dangerous for a person at high risk (vulnerable to physiological disorders) and, as a result, this fact should be taken into account for preventive measures and therapy of paroxysmal conditions.” - Allahverdiyeva, Aysel A. & Babayev, Elchin S.
[Andrew Newberg, MD - Radiologist]:

(8:51) When thinking about spiritual states I think endogenous, hallucinogenic compounds  and molecules that the brain can potentially release are probably very relevant to this topic because on the one hand they may really help us to elucidate what is the neurochemical mechanism of these experiences...

(9:30) Because it really can allow us to match up these experiences that people have with hallucinogens, as well as understanding where they are related in the context of the brains receptors and different parts of the brain that may or may not become active.

(9:49) One of the other interesting things about the pharmacology of DMT is that it's actively transported into the brain. And, so you have to wonder about the role of DMT in just everyday, normal perceptual-you know-inactivity. Too much DMT and things become very psychedelic or not enough DMT in the brain can make things dull and flat and grey.

(10:15) There's something that for me that makes sense, about DMT, you called it the 'spirit molecule' it might almost be called the 'Reality Molecule.' Philosophically it makes sense that something that would be so fundamental to the way that we perceive reality would be imbued out there in reality.

(11:47) N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) when it's administered has a very rapid onset and a very short duration of action; this is because it's very rapidly broken down by the body so that it can be cleared.

(12:01) DMT is rapidly degraded by an enzyme in the liver called Monoamine oxidases (MAO), that's the reason it's not active when you take it by mouth. Where as psyliociben, when you take it by mouth it's not broken down by Monoamine oxidases very quickly at all, so it gets through the liver and passes on into the blood stream and then into the brain.

(32:45) It's the medicine combined with, or interacting with, the set and setting that creates an effect of safety, of trust, of comfort and of resourcefulness that makes it possible for you take some big leaps and receive some big gifts. And if that's not there you just get terrified.

(33:52) The countdown was like, you know, counting down for/preparing for your death; waiting to surrender. And you'd feel the coldness and the coldness just going through your veins and it's really indescribable, it's hard to…it's like ice going through your veins.

(34:12) And the next thing that would happen, besides my racing heart, is this burning sensation would happen on the back of my neck-I mean this was reliable, this was like clockwork, this happened every time that you shot me up with DMT-and then there'd be a hum and the hum would get louder and louder and to the point where it broke apart everything that I was or knew. It was just this wrrrrrrrr, and it just got louder and louder until you just had to surrender to the sound. And then you were there.

(35:00) I would get a warm, full feeling-a golden feeling-in my chest before it went to my head. I'd feel this warm rod, about a inch and a half in diameter start growing up inside my central channel.

(35:16) It would come up and sort of slow, warm up my chest, go up through my head and slow down and put tremendous pressure in my sinuses behind my eyes, slow down, start to grow and extend the skin behind my forehead about one inch, behind my hairline and I was afraid it was going to pop my skin a few times, because it was a very physical feeling. About an inch and a half, two inches above my skull when it popped through there the psychedelic trip had started.

(56:51) Are these experiences, spiritual experiences or otherwise, are they created by physiological processes or is the brain itself responding to something that's going on? And the fact that somebody may actually find a way of turning on their brain to spiritual experiences, again, I'm not sure that that necessarily diminishes the reality or the realness of what those experiences are about. 

(57:14) If the pharmacology or the psycho-pharmacology of psychedelic experiences turned out to be essentially the same as religious or spiritual experiences it would help us to understand where these experiences are occurring within the human brain.

And now, it's time for Dr. Michael Persinger's 'Final Thought'

(21:58) The photon emission energy from the brain, while a person is sitting in the dark, is about 10,000 times less than the stars on a cloudy night. But we can measure it with photo-multipler tubes.

(22:12) However, it's a hundred times more intense than the energy from the cosmic rays that pervade the Universe. Now, I know you're thinking that this is really really weak, but let me do an experiment real quick…okay.
(22:31) Effectively, you're listening to me right now, and, the sounds you're hearing are in the order of about a millipascal in terms of pressure; that's what you're listening to, about 40 to 50 decibels-a millipascal-I'm presuming you're listening to me.

(22:53) Right now, above you, there's over a 100 killapascals of pressure; a billion times more pressure on your body right now, than the pressure associated with me talking with you and you listening. Can you hear the atmosphere?

(23:11) It's a billion times more, of course you can't. It's not the intensity, it's the pattern. The pattern's the critical thing. So never underestimate the importance of the pattern, it's not the intensity.

(23:28) And Furthermore, if we take something like this-like one of these nice little cinnamints-and I drop it, just like that, I dropped it this way; that's about a microjoule of energy.

(23:42) Now for you to see a light in the dark that only takes about 10^-17 joules, that's a decimal point followed by 16 zeros and a 1, which means this is a microjoule, which means that energy-from dropping that right now-would be enough to light-up every eye of every human being on this planet.

(24:04) The critical thing is the energy and the pattern that detects it. Never think bigness is important. So, here's what happens…

"Here we will show that the most remarkable and statistically significant effects have been observed during days of geomagnetic perturbations defined by the days of the declining phase of Forbush decreases in CR intensity. Here we will consider also the possible influence of the long term CR intensity variation (controlled by solar activity cycle) on the different types of human diseases and traffic accidents…

There are two types of space phenomena for which monitoring and forecasting are very important: 1) big space radiation storms caused by solar CR accelerated to energy up to 15-20 GeV during great solar flares and diffusion propagated through the solar corona and interplanetary space (1a), by energetic particles up to energy 10-30 MeV accelerated and propagated by coronal mass ejection and interplanetary shock waves (1b), and 2) great space magnetic storms produced by geomagnetic storms accompanied as a rule by CR-Forbush-decreases. The continuous on-line CR ground observations by NM and MT on the world network my be useful for monitoring and forecasting of great space radiation storms (caused by solar CR) and great space magnetic storms." - Dorman, Lev. 

Michael Persinger's 'Psychotropic Drugs' Lecture

(11:53) Lets take a look at Strassman's work on Ayahuasca. He calls it the 'Spiritual Molecule' and indeed this particular molecule, which is Dimethyltryptamine, right, DMT started in the Amazon Basin.

(12:11) And it's interesting, when people have these experiences: it's all a function of your culture, the local natives say it's the 'Jungle Mother' appearing to them, the Catholics say 'Mother Mary' is appearing to them, and the Protestants say something else, that is 'Christ' appeared to them.
(12:28) So the basic chemistry that's stimulating the brain, is the same but the explanations are given by the culture. Now notice this interesting effect: this is Strassman's work, called 'The Spirit Molecule.'

(12:42) The typical experiences are: kaleidoscopic display of visual hallucinations, separation of consciousness from the physical body (very much like the diagram sequence I showed you of the near-death experience), feelings of another, the feeling of a presence. 

(12:55) Almost always there's a feeling of a presence and cultures can identify it as a spirit guide, or a dead person, or an iconic individual such as a local religious figure; they're all basically the feeling of another.

(13:10) Now, some people have the capacity to make DMT within the Pineal Organ. Because Melatonin is effectively that compound; effectively N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine.

(13:23) So some of you can be naturally high, I've been accused of that; I've been accused of being naturally high because, well it's not just unique to me, the creative people: the musicians, the writers, the poets, the sculptors…All of those individuals often have a altered brain chemistry that gives them insight into other relationships and to other patterns.

(13:49) So some people may take drugs and have it, other people do it spontaneously and some people may be due to an actual modification of their experiences: did you know that Luther, Martin Luther, who started Lutheranism, was a basically low-rate, second-rate Monk until he was struck by lightning.

(14:08) The changes in his temporal lobe organization and the chemistry that he obviously experienced subsequent of that resulted in a massive change in human history.

(14:18) So, the point is that these particular compounds can be made in the brain, it's just that drugs enhance what's already there...
